About Vitamins

So why are vitamins so special?

Your body acts like a powerful machine. Just like a car for example, which needs oil to lubricate the pistons in the engine, Petrol as it's main source on energy, water in to keep it cool, anti freeze for the winter and more importantly break fluid to help it stop. Your body acts in a similar way. All our bodies work far more efficiently with the right amount of food and the correct balance of vitamins and minerals to keep us working at an optimum level. As soon as we are deprived of our fuel (food) we can get weak and feel sluggish.

Getting the right amount of nutrition is equally important, as vitamins and minerals we get from food play a large part in the way our organs, and body, functions. By consuming the right amount of vitamins will help you and your body feel much better and more energetic. Most of us are aware, that much of what we eat everyday contain some form of vitamin and the better, more nutritional foods we eat the better we feel.

The Role of Vitamins and their importance
Lets take a quick look at vitamin C for example, to see the role it's played in history for hundreds of years. The lack of vitamin C has plagued our history with a disease called scurvy, very common until the 1900's - especially among sailors and those travelling to Australia by sailing boats to trade goods and explore the new world.

Scurvy is generally caused by a lack of vitamin C. Some of the main symptoms are - lack of appetite, bleeding gums, loose teeth, swollen ankles and tiny bleeding spots or haemorrhages on the skin. Scurvy killed approximately 2 million sailors between 1500-1800. By the 1800's it was recognised that eating citrus fruits, such as oranges, prevented scurvy but it was not until 1928 that scientists discovered the real role of vitamin C and it's true healing benefits.
